Thank All 453 of ya! We were exactly 100 more than last year! Parade route had some glitches, but we have laready planned and walked out next year's path. I will say we intend to get the Radio/route music fixed.. We will utilize more stairwells to get up to the roof quicker.. We will shorten the route by a football field length.. And we will use a semaphore flagging system so all on the deck can see when the photographer is ready and taking the pictures..

So in all, we learned from this year's mistakes, and will do better next year, where I'm sure we will break 553! :>

Also for those that went to the impromptu fursuit / non rave Sat night dance (I like to think there were more than just fursuiters in there since they were not raver's they liked the mixed genre..) Should I attempt to do a fursuit dance next year, doing the same requests/mixed genres, or should I give up trying to DJ? I think of all the requests we took that night we only were unable to fill like 6 of them.. But, we took requests.. I dunno if you are able to do that over in the rave room. I'm sure if we can get official "alternate"/fursuit dance, we can get some effects lighting to go along with the low lights up to be accomodating of suiters.

I loved the fursuit friendly dance. I couldn't go to the regular dance because it was too dark.

I tried going to the regular dance and could not see a thing but the lights

There's already a fursuit friendly dance.

We don't really take requests because we're performing, and it's just like being an artist, we do what we do.

Finally, double-scheduling two dances at once would be inconsiderate to people playing both.

Just throwing that out there. This year was a weird thing, but normally that's not a good solution.

How is it inconsiderate? people inclined to go to one likely wouldn't be attending the main / other dance anyway. And since most Dj's i've seen "do their own thing" as you say, the crowds opinion (and therefor who is in it or not) really doesn't seem to / shouldn't matter to the performer now does it?

Personally I don't care about the length..i was kinda bummed that we didn't go though Dealers Den area. What I do care about is being stuck on the roof in a black suit. I know a few suits opted out of the picture because it was on the roof.

I don't think I could see a semaphore if I was in suit, not that far away. Why not just have two guys with cell phones, one with the photographer and one with the fursuiters? Then someone could announce when the picture is taken, so those of us with bad eyesight could know.

cus one guy wont be heard by 500 suiters on 2 leval but honestly the suiters shoudkl just be prepared for the shot, the peopel guidign the parade are the only ones who need to knwo when the pic is over so we can get moving faster. maybe a flare gun :)

I think having a fursuit dance, and a regular dance in seperate areas was awesome. Here are some reasons:

A) While the regular dance is probably closer to the ballroom than the dance floor is to the hotel headless lounge, the fursuit dance had an area specifically for suiters to hang out in to cool off, at the dance. Brilliant. Also, more people (furs and non furs) hanging around trying to get pics there... and furpile.
B) The DJs were on the same level, in a room with good visibility, without smoke, lasers and strobe lights, making fursuits (and those taking pictures) cry tears of blood and vitreous humor. No offense to the people that love a good rave, but I think a conventionally lit dance, in a smaller well ventilated room worked better for people that had suits.
C) Listen up here boys a girls. The dance (the fursuit dance at least)doesn't revolve around the DJ. No offense to the Rory or Yappy, who did excellent jobs, but if you put a dance music collection of shuffle, people would come to do one thing... get thier groove thang on. NOW, having said that, having awesome DJs that take requests, and know good dancing music, and are willing to rick roll the crowd, or play funky blues at a dance beat out the same techno oonst oonst that we get at the rave.

Personally, a fursuit dance, maybe after the fursuit-friendly portion of the bigger dance, or perhaps two entirely seperate dances, would be the options I would suggest. This benefits both groups in that the Ravers get faster, dancier music and maybe a longer set, and the fursuiters get a chance to dance around to the featured DJ, and then/or enjoy a fursuiter-speed dance, where nobodys gonna get whacked by glowsticks, with a easy to get to cool off spot.

In closing, yeah, people have different tastes. I don't think we should exclude anyones opinion on dances, but rather, understand that there are two distinct groups of people, and be glad we have the space and resources to accomodate both. Thru discussion with eachother and negotiation with the staff and hotel, I hope we can reach an agreement in a manner that is reasonable and fair to everyone involved.

I was really disappointed when I saw there was a only a whopping one hour time slot for the fursuit dance for the entire con. Of I course missed it due to the schedule mess up. I tried to go to the regular dances, but it was just far too dark and just plain unsafe to go in there in fursuit.
I think there should be at least a one hour fursuit friendly slot each night. Also light levels need to be adjusted, as folks who would like to attend the regular dances in fursuit were totally left out this year.
As for running a separate fursuit or request dance parallel to the regular dance, I think it worked well this year. Maybe get a bigger room next year, as it got pretty crowded in there at times.

What about having the fursuit dances during the day or very early eve, so they don't collide with the dances.
Jul. 4th, 2008 06:11 pm (UTC)
There are two issues with that suggestion.

1. Time/budget costs restraints. Removing and restoring the chair configuration in the main ballroom for the Masquerade, Kage's Story Hour, 2's Rant, and Anthropoly for the evening, then pulling them out again. Remember we have to pay for those expenses.

2. Programming conflicts. Saturday has the fursuit parade and the charity auction. Friday has a ton of people in the dealer room starting commissions and attending other events. It's kind of like asking us to move the nighttime dances into the afternoon. There are just logistical problems that we may or may not be able to overcome.

the mroe attendee's and the more demand the more attention aspects of the nudget whould and woudl get.

Just 2 years a ago, I was told a 2nd pa system for an alt dance was "out of the question" Thats obviously changed and in fact this year there were atleast 3 PA systems running all weekend. Granted AC doesn't have unlimited money, but i think there is enough to acccomidate a 2nd smallish dance room

P.S. the music was still transitioned during the fursuit dances it doens't have to be techno to transition and be mixed

Yappy, I loved the fursuit dances. I did also go to the raves in suit with no more than the club lighting and the glow sticks in my paws, and I had a good time there as well, cuz I do like the wild lights and techno/eurobeat mixes.

Might I suggest a fursuit dance room a little larger and a lot colder, and maybe some club lighting to complete the scene? I think the ambient lighting there was sufficient, just need more party colours there XD

I honestly think keeping a rotation of mixes will go over well. I think as youve said before, keeping one style for too long will become stale to some of those attending. I do think however that the majority party dj style was enjoyed, so I guess there is some ratioing of which styles should also be considered.

It is the Lead Shopwrecker's opinion that the fursuit-friendly dance on Saturday night kicked more ass than the Montana Republican Party.

I think having the fursuit dance a little earlier in the evening may not be a bad idea, as it would give a chance for those fursuiters who also like to rave to do that as well (either in-suit or out). As far as DJ style, generally the raves are composed of excellent pre-worked sets, so having a "party DJ style" DJ setup at the fursuit-friendly dance would offer a nice change of pace for those who would prefer such.

both have their place and their audience. a weddign DJ doesn;t work so well with lazers :) I liek both formats and woudl love a choice fo which to attend
Jul. 4th, 2008 12:13 am (UTC)
yes please, AC is big enough i think ti can afford both the space, and the equipment for a 2nd dance room in teh westin most of the nights, atttendence is strogn enough I think you'll get a good turn out, we packed that room both during the dead dog and the fursuit dance. And every year an alt dance was held it was well attended. Mixed format works well.

I'd liek to see better speakers, a bigger room, and mor elights, also a better hidden headless section either out in the hall, a portion of the room, or if it is in west morland, it's close enough to the actual headless there.

I'd also like to audition / volenmteer to DJ in that room :) It seems unlikely I'll get main stage at AC, but I can certainly handle a fursuit / mixed format dance of that scale

I can't speak for anyone else, but I had a blast at the second fursuit dance, even if I am getting old and only lasted for an hour and a half. I already thanked Rory in person for it, but thankyou as well. I would like to see this done again next year, you might not have been able to do everyones requests, but you atleast had a good cross section of music.

It's a good thing you and rory did the dead dog, the meet n great and the fursuit dance cus otherwise all i would have heard was the rave music. The non rave Dj's were only there on Thursday, so anyone coming in friday missed it. Granted the furusit dance in the main room if the schedual wasn't goofed woudl have fixed that too, but still. Thanks for fighting for the 2nd dance KP
