Anthrocon Dining Guide / Sneak Preview

In just 34 days, hordes of hungry furries will descend on the city of Pittsburgh. Fortunately, we've put together a Dining Guide to assist you in finding places to eat within easy walking distance while you're at the convention.

We've made some changes and improvements to the Dining Guide this year based on feedback from our attendees:

This year, the Dining Guide and At-Con Guide are being merged into one publication: The Convention Guide. It's the same easy-to-carry (Digest-size) format as last year's Dining Guide, but packed with information you'll find useful while at the convention.
Those of you with dietary restrictions will be happy to learn that in addition to noting restaurants that have vegetarian options, we are now making note of restaurants which have gluten-free options.
We're trying something new this year by crowdsourcing the ratings that appear in the Dining Guide (to either supplement or replace the Yelp ratings). There will be a notes section in your Dining Guide for you to record where you ate during the convention and any other comments. We encourage you to rate the places you ate at. The more information we get, the better we can make the Dining Guide. You can drop off the list at the convention (location TBD... see the Dining Guide for details) before Closing Ceremonies on Sunday, e-mail it to book-2012 (at) anthrocon.org, or if you have a Twitter account, send a tweet to us at @AnthroconDining.
You can also use these methods to let us know of any inaccuracies you find in the Dining Guide. Although our staff does a lot of research and tries to make the Guide as accurate as possible, things might change between press time and the convention. You can help make the Guide better for everyone by letting us know if a place listed is closed (or the hours are incorrect, prices aren't accurate, additional gluten-free dining locations we missed, &c.).
Need to ship something home? Make copies? Run out of saline solution for contact lenses? The Dining Guide also has a listing of services sure as copy shops and pharmacies within walking distance.
Driving to Anthrocon? The Dining Guide map now shows $5 or less event/evening/weekend parking lots.

The figure below shows a sample Dining Guide entry and what information may be included in each listing.

An online version of the Convention Guide should be available sometime next week. As always, your feedback is important to us and we hope to make your Anthrocon experience an enjoyable one! See you in 34 days!

We're trying something new this year. Signups for Anthrocon's Artists' Alley will be conducted ahead of the convention. We'll still be running the lottery, but in order to take part you must sign up at our special web page. More information can be found there. Ever since last Anthrocon, I've been planning with much excitement to go to AC 2012. At the time, I wasn't aware of anything that could interfere with those plans.

I realized there was one BIG interference yesterday.

For whatever reason, the college I just graduated from decided to hold the ceremony in June. I actually graduated last December. So, while me and Aureus were running errands, he and I realized it while looking up the graduation ceremony details.

The ceremony is on June 16th, smack dab right in the middle of Anthrocon.

Needless to say, I was upset; I had been looking forward to AC all year. But, a ceremony to commemorate my Bachelor's degree, where my family will be there.. yeah, AC's gonna have to wait yet another year. *sigh* But heck, this Bachelor's degree's a HUGE deal to me and my family, so it's only fair. I only wish I had noticed this discrepancy sooner.

So it is with regret that I must get a refund on my AC registration. I will be happy to message or email Kage or Giza about getting refunds for me and my mate as soon as I get his badge info. I realize the deadline to do so is June 1st, so I'll be sure to do this soon. I also have a complication right now; I closed the checking account that paid for my registration, as I switched banks recently. I'll need help with those options as well.

I was really looking forward to congratulating Fernando and meeting the Guests of Honor.. here's hoping for AC 2013!

Anthrocon 2012 Seeks Artwork/Writing Submissions

The deadline for submissions is less than a month away!

Anthrocon is currently seeking submissions of artwork, fiction, photography, and articles for publication in its 2012 conbook. The Anthrocon conbook offers a fantastic forum for artists and writers to showcase their talents to their peers. To make contributing to the conbook easier, a file-uploading site is available. Anthrocon asks for non-exclusive print rights for submitted works. The artist or author may publish the submitted work in any other fashion; previously, at the same time, and after.

While we welcome any submissions of most any nature, please be aware that priority may be given to those works that complements the theme of the convention, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.' All submissions should be in the 'G' to 'PG-13' rating.

As you may have heard, Anthrocon's selected charity this year is Hello Bully, a local Pittsburgh 501(c)3 pit bull shelter and rescue. While cash donations made at the convention are great, the majority of funds are raised via donations of artwork and merchandise to our Charity Auction and Charity Raffle. We're looking for popular items and unique craftwork that will make people say, "I want that!"

They are opening a Ben and Jerry's retail location in the spring at 936 Penn avenue.

The location will be run by a non profit that help those with disabilities or other barriers to finding employment.

Bus to Anthrocon?

Hey guys.

I took the Megabus to Anthrocon last year and I just hated it. It was crowded and the seats felt like they were made out of outdoor carpetting. The train and airfare are equally priced at around 200 dollars a head. I'm not looking to dish out that kind of money.

So, I have been kicking around an idea for a while. If I could book a charter bus too and from Anthrocon, do you think I could find enough people who'd be willing to go? I want to get a feel for the interest before I call and ask for quotes. I'd book a 50 person motorcoach with a lavatory, leaving the Wednesday before and returning that Sunday night or Monday morning. Looking at the online quotes, if 40 people pledged to ride, the trip would be about $40. If only 20 people pledged, it'd be like $80. But still, you gotta admit that's a lot cheaper than the megabus for a furry only, private bathroom bus. We could even have "in flight" movies, lol.

This is all tentative, so please give me your feedback. The bus would probably leave from a train station with a park and ride in NJ, so you can also come from NY, DE, or PA on the train, or if you're in NJ, just leave your car.

Anthrocon has selected Hello Bully to be our beneficiary for 2012. Their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and repair the reputation of the American Pit Bull Terrier. They will be at the Charity Auction and will have a table in the Dealers' Room where you can meet them and peruse information about their organization.

2012 Dealer Registration to begin November 22!

We will begin accepting applications for Dealer Tables for Anthrocon 2012 at 6:00 PM EST on Tuesday, November 22, 2011. A link will be activated on our Dealers' Room Information page at that time (you may need to refresh your browser. Dealers, please be certain to read the Dealer Information Packet and note some important changes, such as new locations of tables with access to electrical power, updated rules, and most importantly, the sheer colossal size of the room. We are stretching the aisles from 15 to 20-22 feet all around. With the whole of Hall B available to us, we are confident that we have all of the room that we will ever conceivably need!

A mail-in application is available for those who do not wish to use the online registration system. That application must be postmarked no earlier than November 22, and will be processed according to its postmark date.

Charity Suggestions - 2012 Edition

The Anthrocon Board will soon be deciding on the Charity to support for 2012. If you know of a charitable organization that you would like to recommend be added to the current candidate list, please suggest it here or as a followup to this post in Anthrocon's other forums by December 31st.

Criteria for candidacy:
- Must be animal-related (back to basics this year)
- Must be 501(c)3
- Must be within approximately 60 miles of the Pittsburgh, PA metropolitan area
- Must be incorporated in Pennsylvania (can't be in Ohio or West Virginia)
- Must not be a charity we have already supported.
