Charity Auction/Raffle donations needed!

As you may have heard, Anthrocon's selected charity this year is Equine Angels Rescue, a local 501(c)3 equine rescue, rehabilitator, and shelter. While cash donations made at the convention are great, the majority of funds are raised via donations of artwork and merchandise to our Charity Auction and Charity Raffle. We're looking for popular items and unique craftwork that will make people say, "I want that!"

While we must distribute items between the Raffle and Auction based on available space, time, and perceived and past value, here are some examples of donations that went big in past years...

Great examples for the raffle: Crafts based on hot trends (Harry Potter handmade house scarves - $57); Large amounts of candy (5lb Hershey bar, 9.25lb Nestle Crunch bar - $70); Art bought at prior convention art shows ("Wrath" art by Terrie Smith - $83); Giant, brand new plush of popular characters (Large "Bolt" plush - $107); Merchandise based on popular fiction (Dr. Who's sonic screwdriver - $158)

Great examples for the auction: Fursuit costumes and commissions (Horstachio costume & candy - $150); Rare convention memorabilia (Full set of all AC t-shirts since 1997 - $200); Professional sculpture (Dragon statue - $225); Unique opportunities (A speaking part in audio version of Diane Duane's "The Last Meow" - $500); Dorsai fursuit tags (Tag #1000 - $1600)

Anthrocon 2013 Conbook Seeks Artwork/Writing Submissions

Anthrocon is currently seeking submissions of artwork, fiction, photography, and articles for publication in its 2013 conbook. The Anthrocon conbook offers an excellent forum for artists and writers to showcase their talents to their peers. To make contributing to the conbook easier, a file-uploading site is available. Anthrocon asks for non-exclusive print rights for submitted works. The artist or author may publish the submitted work in any other fashion; previously, at the same time, and after.

While we welcome any submissions of most any nature, please be aware that priority may be given to those works that complements the theme of the convention, 'The Fast and the FURRRious.' All submissions should be in the 'G' to 'PG-13' rating.

Anthrocon 2013 Charity: Equine Angels Rescue

Anthrocon has selected Equine Angels Rescue to be our beneficiary for 2013. Their mission is to rescue and rehabilitate homeless, neglected, and abused horses. They will be at the Charity Auction and will have a table in the Dealers' Room where you can meet them and peruse information about their organization.

Anthrocon 2013 hotel reservations are now OPEN!

You can now begin to make your reservations at all of Anthrocon's six hotels for Anthrocon 2013. All hotels have availability as of right now. Remember, if your favorite hotel is not appearing, try shortening your stay. It is possible that a hotel may be sold out on just one night (usually Wednesday or Sunday). There's a good chance (although no guarantee) that we can stretch an existing reservation by one night.

VERY IMPORTANT: All of our hotels share the same housekeeping policy. Even if your room is not to be serviced, a housekeeper must still knock on the door at some point just to make sure there's no dead bodies or tarantulas in the room. Also, all hotels require a one-night room and tax pre-payment for every reservation. It may not show up immediately on your statement so do not panic if you do not see the charge for a week or two. As long as you have a confirmation, then you have a room.

The Anthrocon Board will soon be deciding on the Charity to support for 2013. If you know of a charitable organization that you would like to recommend be added to the current candidate list, please suggest it here or as a followup to this post in Anthrocon's other forums by December 31st.

Criteria for candidacy:
- Must be animal-related
- Must be 501(c)3
- Must be based within approximately 60 miles of the Pittsburgh, PA metropolitan area
- Must be incorporated in Pennsylvania (can't be in Ohio or West Virginia)
- Must not be a charity we have already supported.

After doing pretty much nothing but working on videos since I got home last Tuesday, I finally finished off my video library from Anthrocon 2012 - aka the BEST CON EVER! I had a blast and it was without a doubt one of the most fun weekends of my life.

From Sardyuon's amazing performance to fursuiting fun all around the convention and at Tonic, to the unbelievably talented Fursuit Dance Competition Finalists, it's all under the cut for you!

FURSUITING FUN AT AC 2012

Finishing off my AC 2012 videos in style - here's my annual "fursuiting fun" compilation taken over the course of the convention at various locations. This is always a blast to put together and helps me relive some of the most fun times I had in my life! So many great suits this year!

FURSUITING FUN AT TONIC w/KIJANI AND FRIENDS

Especially at night during Anthrocon, Tonic - the bar and grill across from the Westin and Convention Center, is one of the most happenin' places in the city. Here's a video featuring fun, crazy, and otherwise inane fursuiting highlights from a memorable Saturday night on the town.

The response from the local "Pittsburghers" was overwhelmingly positive like always!

FURSUIT PARADE

An amazing (world-record) 1,044 suits were in the parade this year... that's a lot of fur! I know everyone and their mom probably got video of the parade, but here's mine, shot by harleybadger1, taken from the skybridge at the Convention Center.

OPENING/CLOSING CEREMONIES HIGHLIGHTS

Selected highlights from the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the convention. Includes Guest of Honor introductions, important announcements and of course the official numbers for registration and the record-breaking year for charity fundraising that brought tears to the eyes of the representatives from Hello Bully.

FERNANDO DECARVALHO AT ANTHROCON

Fernando DeCarvalho, owner of Fernando's (now Furryland) Subs right down the street from the Westin and Convention Center, made a pair of appearances at Anthrocon's Opening and Closing Ceremonies to pay his respects to the furries that raised $23,000 to keep him open through July this year, and pay off his debts from the economic recession.

This is a truly amazing story that has gotten the Furry Fandom an extraordinary amount of good press, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer and kind-hearted individual that welcomed, with open arms, an often-maligned group of people to the city many years ago.

FURRY IN THE MEDIA/POSITIVELY PRESENTING FURRY TO THE PUBLIC PANEL by UNCLE KAGE & KP

The esteemed and experienced chairman of Anthrocon, Uncle Kage, imparted his wisdom on Friday morning with the assistance of programming director KP in the realm of dealing with furry in the media, as well as how to positively promote the furry fandom to the public.

As I have spent my career in print media as a journalist myself, this is something I care deeply about, and I will actually be hosting a similar panel at Rainfurrest this September. Enjoy and hope you learn something, along with a few laughs along the way.

SARDYUON'S US DEBUT PERFORMANCE

AC's fursuit guest of honor was the incredibly talented Sardyuon from Japan, and he wowed Anthrocon attendees three times on the main stage in the Spirit of Pittsburgh Ballroom at the convention center.

This was the first of his performances, his United States debut on Friday night. It was his first time to the states and it was an honor to be graced with his presence. Watch, enjoy, and be astounded at one of the greatest fursuit talents in the world today!

AC 2012 MASQUERADE HIGHLIGHTS

GARY GNU

Local "Pittsburgher" Jim Martin (AC Guest of honor in 2010) opened up the Anthrocon 2012 Masquerade with the much-anticipated re-introduction of Gary Gnu from the 1980s show The Great Space Coaster. Jim was the original voice actor and performer for the character.

JUST FINE

Captain Furry, Snowie, Nicona Shadowolf and Hypr star in this cleverly written skit about a not-so-ordinary day for the new Vice Principal at Pittsburgh High.

HUGGA WUGGA

An entertaining group of fursuiters performed this sketch from the Muppet Show.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S FARCE

What do you get when you cross a walrus, a shark, and some Shakespeare? Why, this, of course! Join Sharky and gang in an entertaining "play" on some beloved poetry of yore.

The amazing Sardyuon did a shortened version of his routine at the Anthrocon 2012 Masquerade on Saturday night, capping off the evening with his gravity-defying display.

FURSUIT DANCE COMPETITION

The Fursuit Dance Finals at AC is the best of the best in the fandom at their craft, and the finals this year was absolutely packed with talent.

FURSUIT DANCE COMPETITION FINALS HIGHLIGHT REEL

Each of the 20 fursuit dancers in the finals of the prestigious AC 2012 Fursuit Dance Competition rocked the stage, and I pay homage to their talent with this unique highlight reel compilation video that features each of their awesome dances.

CLOSING DANCE AND JUDGING

Here is the closing dance and judging portion of the AC Fursuit Dance Competition Finals where we see who will take home the champion's crown. One thing's for sure, the judges had a tougher task than ever this year as the talent level was unbelievable across the board in the finals. Also, they opened up one judge's vote to the audience via "text this number" like they do on TV, which was a very nice addition to the competition.

I've been chatting with Deputy Bill Kisner. You probably saw him in the Westin's lobby where he hangs out just to keep an eye on things and make sure everyone is being safe. He's the African American gentleman with the big smile and the biceps that are bigger around than my waist. A lot of us have gotten to know him and I am pretty sure that many share my very high opinion of him.

I asked Deputy Kisner if there was anything extra we could do to thank him (maybe a beer, but every time I see him he's in uniform, so that wouldn't work), and he noted that a nice letter or two from our attendees that got put into his personnel file would come in handy when the annual reviews come around.

You know, that's a fine idea. For all the hard work, all the times we've called for help or medical assistance and he's been right at our sides, let's see if we can't get Bill a nice raise! If you've got something particularly praiseworthy to mention, please drop an email
to Allegheny Sheriff William P. Mullen [Wmullen(at)court.allegheny.pa.us] and tell him how much we like Deputy William Kisner.

Here are my photos from ac this year. There are some hoo-man photos in there of good friends and various room parties and whatnot, let me know if anything needs to be taken down. Photos are free use as long as credit is given. Wish I coulda grabbed more but was difficult balancing suiting and shooting. I shot a large number of these on manual settings so a lot of me playing around with lighting and a good handful of these were shot in suit on P with live view. Was also hard to always have my cam with me in suit as that limits how crazy I can be without damaging my camera :P but either way, here they are, apologies for my slow server.
